Merry Christmas! There is some DARK SHIT on our screens this year.
Typically around Christmas the options for movies are limitless and this year is no different. Maybe with my current life situation I am attracted to the darker stuff that is out there OR maybe it’s because of a more subconscious plot the studios have out to prepare everyone for the inevitable apocalypse next year. Regardless there is an infinite amount of “family fun holiday movies”, but the ones I’m going to save time and money for are the darkest that are out right now. Why can’t I just enjoy popcorn movies sometimes? 2011 is the year of the disaster movie…in a very subtle way.
Think CONTAGION, SHAME, MARGIN CALL, TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY, MELANCHOLIA. I haven’t actually caught as much as I would have liked this year, but what I have seen is a trend in popular films of destruction, addictions, and greed. Who knows what the hell is going on, but it is certainly possible that a Hollywood conspiracy theory is subconsciously invading our minds this holiday season and gearing us up for what will be the end of the world as we know it. Thoughts?
